Son, Vestby is one of Norway’s most charming coastal towns — and one of its most vibrant art communities. Located on the Oslofjord about 40 minutes south of Oslo, this historic trading port has attracted artists for over a century.
A National Heritage Town
Son was an important timber trading port from the 1550s, with customs revenues that once doubled those of nearby Moss. On Dutch maps of the era, the Oslofjord was called “Zoon Water.” In 2013, Son was registered in Norway’s National Heritage Register as a historic urban area of national significance.
Artist Colony Heritage
From 1900 to 1920, Son became known as an artist community, attracting painters like Henrik Sorensen. Nearby Hvitsten was home to Edvard Munch, who purchased Nedre Ramme in 1910. Today, Ramme is a world-class cultural destination.
