Ingrid Amuri Rutherford (b. 1962) is a visual artist based in Son, Norway — a historic coastal town on the Oslofjord, registered as a nationally significant cultural environment since 2013. Son has a rich artist colony tradition dating back to 1900-1920, and is part of the Oslofjord artist corridor alongside Hvitsten (where Edvard Munch owned a property from 1910-1944).
Ingrid grew up in Canada with a Norwegian mother from Skjeberg and a father from New Zealand. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Art History from Queen’s University, completed a four-year art education at Ontario College of Art in Toronto, and has a two-year education in graphic design. She has lived in Norway since 1988.
Artistic Practice
Working in both oil and acrylic, Ingrid creates bold, colorful paintings that seek “a place between reality and abstraction.” Her work has strong “wall power” — vibrant imagery that commands room presence. Themes include local Son architecture and landscapes, forest scenes, fjord vistas, and conceptual explorations of life’s expectations versus lived reality.
“I use clear and bold colors, exploring the interplay between different color shades and temperatures. My goal is for the images to challenge, engage, and trigger something in the viewer — deepening people’s connection to nature’s power and sense of place.”
